The Valencian artist, Javier Calvo, donates to Universitat de València five of his most important works, which belong to the geometric works of art of his constructivist period. The works were created in the 70’s and reflect a more and more technological and scientific society. The donation has took place today at cultural centre La Nau, and the artist, the Principal of Universitat de València -Esteban Morcillo-, and the Vice-principal for Culture, Equality and Planning -Antonio Ariño-, have attended the event.
During the event last Friday, the works’ assignement signing has took place. The works of art are now displayed thanks to the exhibition ‘Javier Calvo. Obras donadas a la Universitat de València’ and can be visited from today to next May the 1st in La Nau’s Sala Oberta. Along with these five works, another of Calvos’ works is also exhibited because it is part of the collection Martínez Guerricabeitia.
The Universitat de València’s Principal, Esteban Morcillo, expressed that ‘he is glad of such a donation.’ ‘Universitat de València is a Valencian society wealth, and this donation enrichs the Valencian citizens’, the Principal stated. He also underlined that ‘it is an honor to receive part of the work of an artist like Javier Calvo, who loves our university since he was young man.’
Javier Calvo said that this donation to the university represents a ‘historical moment’ with a special meaning for him both from the sentimental and institutional point of view. He has recalled that his first exhibition was held at the Club Universitario, just next to the current cultural centre La Nau. He stressed that his paintings are inspired by a ‘research process and the rigorous analysis, so they share the goals and philosophy of the university.’
Javier Calvo (Valencia, 1941) studied painting at Escuela de Bellas Artes de San Carlos in Valencia and at the national arts school in Paris. From the 70’s his art begins a geometrical period and it becomes his most famous one. He has received many prizes and mentions during his career and his works of art have been exhibited in museum such as IVAM, Madrid’s Reina Sofía, Museo de Bellas Artes San Pío V in Valencia, the museum of contemporary art in Antwerp (Belgium), Museo de Arte Contemporáneo of Montevideo (Uruguay), or the contemporary art museum in Mammola (Italy), among others.
The five works of art show complex, symmetrical compositions and use geometric forms. Their titles are: Cuadrado inscrito, Tríptico móvil, Itinerario en forma G, Itinerario hacia el otoño y Mantis religiosa, this one being a work of his latest geometric period.
