The five Principals of the Valencian public universities.

The International Committee in charge of evaluating the International Campus of Excellence projects selected in 2011 by the Ministry of Education, Culture and Sport has been positively assessed the development of the Campus Habitat 5U programme, which has got the ‘good progress’ grade. Out of the nine excellence projects that were implemented five years ago, the Campus Habitat 5U project is one out of the four ones that have obtained this grade. This project ispromoted by the five universities that form the Valencian Public University System: Universitat de València, Universitat Politècnica de València, Universitat d’Alacant, Universitat Jaume I and Universitat Miguel Hernández de Elche.

The evaluation report underlines the potential of Campus Habitat 5U to claim the support to Mediterranean corridor, pointing out that it could be a main engine to its boost. In this regard, it encourages to study the Mediterranean corridor case with data from researches. The evaluation committee has underlined the potential that the collaboration among the five universities and the participation of companies and administrations have represented. Furthermore, it is welcomed the bridge that the project represents ‘between the professional training, the education and the university research’ together with ‘the development of a real innovation ecosystem’.

In addition to this, it underlined that ‘the collaboration of the five universities gives a unique opportunity to a stronger research, education and innovation agenda. The local collaboration can allow a more intelligent economic growth. In particular, the social cohesion, the business spirit and the interdisciplinary are key elements to the Campus Habitat 5U impact’.

Excellence project that supports the territory

Under the motto ‘Uniting excellence, improving habitat, reactivating well-being’, Campus Habitat 5U is an unique excellence project in Spain in the environment and territory field, based on the interaction of several financial sectors and numerous disciplines. The project addresses four areas of action: buildings and homes (in the habitat area), and planning and improvement of social space, both urban and rural (in the territory area). Campus Habitat 5U aims to drive and catalyse a process of smart, sustainable and integrated growth based on knowledge, innovation, creativity, resource efficiency, internationalisation and interdisciplinary, not only in the Valencian Community but also in the Mediterranean arc.

The Campus Habitat 5U project comprises all the Valencian Community territory since, apart from all the Valencian public universities, companies of the habitat and territory field, institutions and city halls of the involved cities (Alicante, Elche, Valencia and Castellón) have joined this initiative. Moreover, the project counts on the strategic role of the Network of Technological Institutes (REDIT) and the support of the autonomous and local Valencian public administrations.

The Ministry of Education, Culture and Sport has highlighted the overall quality of the progress of most of the nine projects approved in the 2011 Call for the Campus of International Excellence and the important effort made by Spanish universities to develop projects even in a context of increasing difficulty due to funding problems.
