Carlos Alberto Torres reflects, at the University, on innovation and quality

Carlos Alberto Torres, president of the World Congress of Comparative Educative Societies (WCCES) will lead two conferences, on the 11 and 15 September, in the Factulty of Philosophy and Education Sciences. The first of them, linked to innovation and educational quality and the second one will be the inaugural talk of the Faculty’s own Master’s Degrees.

The first conference, which will take place in the Salo de Graus of the Faculty of Philosophy and Education Sciences on 11 September at noon, will deal with innovation and educative quality. This talk will be organized by the Center of Quality and Formation Manuel Sanchis Guarner and it is entitled ‘Educacion y Agendas de Globalizacion’ (Education and Globalization Agendas).

The second one, on the other hand, is organized by the Faculty of Philosophy and Education Sciences is entitled ‘Educacion Comparada: la dialectica entre lo Global y lo Local’ (Compared Education: dialectics between the Global and the Local). The conference is placed as the inaugural one for the Faculty’s own Master’s Degrees. It will take place on Moday 14 September, also in the Salo de Graus at 18:00.

Carlos Alberto Torres is professor of Social Sciences and Compared Education. Political sociologist of education, he graduated in Sociology at the University of Salvador (Argentina). He studied a Master’s Degree on Economic Politics in Argentina (1964-1976). He did his postgraduate dissertation in Mexico (Mastery in Political Sciences, FLASCO) and doctorate at the University of Stanford, United States. He is also the founder director of the Institute Paulo Freire in São Paulo, Brazil.

Among its main research areas social and cognitive performances, alphabetization politics and state politics as compensatory legitimizations are included. His politic and educative research is centered on the idea of equality, equity and efficiency in primary education, secondary education and high education in the United States. The theoretical and empirical investigation of Doctor Torres has crystalized on the development of a political sociology of critical education. He is considered to be one of the main world authorities on education in South America and the main biographer of the Brazilian philosopher and critical social theorist, Paulo Freire.

Doctor Torres is the author of 37 books and over 135 research articles, book chapters and encyclopedia entries in several languages. He is the editor of the prestigious series Routledge (New York) in Education, Social Theory and Cultural Changes, and president of the Education Commission and the Society of the Latin-American Council of Social Sciences (CLACSO), a federation of elite research centers in South America.

He is the associated dean for Global Programmes in the Information Postgraduate and Studies School in the University of California (UCLA) since June 2013; and he has held different positions of responsibility in institutions dedicated to social sciences and education.
