Carmen Leal, first Spanish full university professor of Psychiatry, honouree by the Valencian College of Physicians

Carmen Leal, first Spanish full university professor of Psychiatry at the Universitat de València, has been awarded by the Valencian College of Physicians. The college has given to her the Oustanding Career Award, and because of this she becomes the first Valencian physician woman to have this award.

Carmen Leal, now retired, was head of Psychiatry service in the Hospital Clínico de Valencia and in the Hospital Universitario de Cádiz. She was also full university professor of Psychiatry in the Universitat de València, the first one in Spain. Moreover, she was dean of the Faculty of Medicine in the University of Cádiz.

The chairperson of the Valencian College of Physicians, Mercedes Hurtado, has described Carmen Leal as an excellent professional “who has achieved every goal in the working level in the most difficult times”, she has opened “many paths” and she has overcome barriers in favour of women.
