The renowned Austrian economist and university professor Christian Felber has participated on Tuesday, 19 February at the Claustre Obert discussions, which has been held in the Cultural Centre La Nau at the University of Valencia. The conference 'Economic crisis and human rights' has been held at the Aula Magna and has been organized in collaboration with Amnesty International. The event has been hosted and moderated by the Vice-Principal for Culture, Equality of the University of Valencia, Antonio Ariño. The conference can be followed via MediaUni
Christian Felber (1972, Salzburg) is the creator of the concept of the Economy of the Common Good Economy (EBC), a proposal for a social and economic development alternative to neoliberalism, where human values and ethics are favoured, and which hundreds of companies and people across Europe are putting into practice. Professor at the University of Vienna, Felber is a founding member of the global justice movement Attac (Austria) and to promote the so-called "democratic banking". As the creator of the concept of EBC, Felber proposes to rewrite the rules of the capitalist system with alternatives based on ethics, which we must build globally.
Felber represents a current of critical reflection about the current world situation and puts foward a completely different model based on sustainability, solidarity, cooperation and fair distribution of wealth in all areas. In this way, Felber proposes a new economic, social and political model for enterprises to be more solidary, egalitarian and ecological. The key to growth is that businesses and social organizations work as a social tool rather than as money-making machines, because the current growth model system does not work. All of this is further explained in his book "The Economy for the Common Good" (Deusto, 2012) which has had a major impact, especially in political and economic sectors.
Claustre Obert is a discussion forum created by the University of Valencia, through the Department for Culture and Equality, and the newspaper El País to analyze the most important issues of current social, cultural and economic.
