
The Confucius Institute of the University of Valencia has organized starting this Wednesday, 30 January, and until Saturday 23 February, numerous commemorative activities of the Chinese New Year or Spring Festival. It will be conferences, workshops, courses and exhibitions which bring to the general public the richness of this ancient culture.
The Confucius Institute of the University of Valencia, which recently has celebrated five years of existence, is an institution equivalent to the Cervantes Institute or the British Council, created to promote the development of Chinese education and culture. The Confucius Institute of the University of Valencia, the second oldest in Spain, organizes highly successful Chinese language courses and cultural activities. Also publishes bi-monthly the journal Institut Confucio bilingüe xinès-espanyol, accessible through the website. www.uv.es/confucio.
The events of New Year celebration pretend to bring Chinese cultural traditions and festivities. The programme has begun with the conference ‘Xina a través de la música Pop occidental’, by the music critic and journalist Rafa Cervera. The talk has dealed with the fascination that pop and rock has created in Chinese culture and traditions, as its influence in songs, albums, covers and videos of artists such as, David Bowie, Rolling Stones, Brian Eno or Damon Albarn.
The 31 January at 19:00 is scheduled the conference ‘La Càmera Fosca en la Història. El Naixement de la Fotografía’. A review of history of representation and the use of image through the viewpoint from Palaeolithic era to the digital age, by the team Fotolateras: Lola Barcia and Marinella Forcadell.

The Chinese Parade will begin at 18:30 Saturday 9 February, from Pelayo St. of Valencia, next to the Estació del Nord. At night, there will be the traditional New Year’s dinner.
