On November the 17th, in the hall La Sala de la Muralla of the Col.legi Major Rector Peset, the exhibition ‘La imatge de la química. Destapa-la!’ (The image of chemistry. Open it up!) started to show thirty images taken from art, press, advertising or academic literature grouped in five sections on different areas of chemistry. The exhibition joins in the many activities of the University of Valencia -2nd university in Spain in chemical research- scheduled along 2011. This year has been declared International Year of Chemistry.
The exhibition, programmed to the 8th of January, reflects on the causes and consequences of the negative social perception that chemistry has traditionally held –and still holds-. The term is usually associated to poisons, dangerous substances, weapons, and environmental pollution, despite the efforts of scientists to show chemistry as a source of knowledge, health and well-being. A negative attitude may have helped to decrease the number of students and university departments. It has also contributed to create new specialized studies which modulate the word ‘chemistry’ or leave it out: ‘química verde’ (green chemistry), ‘ciencia de materiales’ (materials science), ‘ciencia molecular’ (molecular science), and ‘nanotecnología’ (nanotechnology).
