More than 3,000 people visited the exhibition ‘Nosaltres, els valencians’ on Joan Fuster’s work (Sueca, 1922-1992). The exhibition was organized by Universitat de València through its Office of the Vice-principal for Culture, Equality and Planning, and was shown at cultural centre La Nau from February 16th to March 18th. Its aim was the 50 years celebration of Fuster’s work, and for that many activities were scheduled as well. The Interuniversity Institute of Valencian Philology also took part in the organization.
It is not an easy task to organize an exhibition about a book, but this one has been a success both in terms of attendance and due to the interest arosen in some institutions which are now interested showing the exhibition throughout 2012 year. In fact, the exhibition is inaugurated today (19:30) in Ontinyent (Casa de la Cultura-Palau dels Barons de Santa Bàrbara) and then it will travel to Barcelona (from May to September), Universitat Jaume I de Castelló (from October to November) and finally to Sueca (November and December).
The essay ‘Nosaltres, els valencians’ published in Barcelona on May 1962 is an essential work in the history of the Valencian people, and it is considered a reference point for all the studies and trends that followed. This year we also celebrate 20 years of the author’s death and 90 years since he was born.
The exhibition is coordinated by Ferran Carbó and Francesc Pérez i Moragón from Chair Joan Fuster (UV), and Brígida Alapont (Casa Fuster, Sueca). It tries to show, through the author’s documents, who was Joan Fuster in 1962, the process of the book’s creation, the immediate success it had and the difficulties found due to Franco’s censorship.
Through 50 year, the book has been published 30 times in Catalan and 3 in Spanish. Its success among people and among scholars, sociologists, economists and politicians has been enormous. In choosing the documents for the exhibition, the organizers have deliberately chosen the references that immediately followed the book’s publication. Moreover, they wanted to show the public the least known side of the author, since his house in Sueca is not a public institution at the moment.
Thus, an art collection was selected to be exhibited –made up of presents from its authors most of the times- with pieces of Andreu Alfaro, Antoni Saura, Manuel Boix, Albert Ràfols Casamada, Antoni Tàpies, Joan Ponç, Joan Miró, Rafael Armengol, Artur Heras, Equipo Crónica, Josep Renau, Equipo Realidad, or Hernández Mompó, among others. Some samples of his graphic collection have been selected as well.
The exhibition was organized by the Office of the Vice-principal for Culture, Equality and Planning at Unversitat de València and Chair Joan Fuster (from the same institution). It had the collaboration of the town council of Sueca, the Interuniversitary Institute of Valencian Philology, the Departament d e Filologia Catalana and the Institut d’Estudis Catalans.
