Experts discuss at Club Diario Levante how to prevent forest fires

‘What to do after a fire? How to prevent forest fires’ is the title of the round-table that took place at Club Diario Levante last Tuesday. The debate has counted on the participation of different experts on the subject, moderated by Maria Josep Picó, scientific journalist of the Chair for Scientific Dissemination of the University of Valencia.

Some of the participants have been the General Director of Natural Environment of Generalitat Valenciana, Alfredo José González; the full professor of Physical Geography of the University of Valencia Alejandro Pérez; the Mayor of Gestalgar, Raúl Pardos; and Luis Súller, member of the board of directors of a platform for affected people by fires occurred within the province of Valencia last summer.

In total, five fires burned more than 63,000 hectares at the Valencian Community, a territory that is being affected by rural depopulation drift. Fire has burnt over ninety per cent of the land of several municipalities. The debate will discuss about what to do after environment and landscapes destruction, given the reduction of economic alternatives. Furthermore, they will try to find the key points to prevent major forest fires.

The Club Diario Levante meeting is organized with the collaboration of the Office of the Vice-Principal for Territorial Projection and Participation of the University of Valencia, Valencians pel Canvi and the Valencian Platform Rio+20.
