The FISABIO-University of Valencia Chair will launch its programme of activities on Thursday 12 February in the morning with a presentation entitled "Medical Innovation and Sustainability of the Health System: A Scientific and Ethical Perspective" made by the Rector of the Menéndez Pelayo International University (UIMP), César Nombela. The lecture will be part of the event for presenting the programme of activities of this chair created in June 2014 following the signing of a cooperation agreement between the University of Valencia and the Foundation for the Promotion of Health and Biomedical Research of the Valencian Community (FISABIO).
The session will begin at 12 pm in the auditorium of FISABIO (Avinguda Catalunya, 21) and will involve participation from the Vice-Rector for Research and Science Policy of the University of Valencia, Pilar Campins, the Director-General for Planning, Evaluation, Research and Patient Care of the Valencian Department of Health, Teresa de Rojas, the Managing Director of FISABIO Foundation, Eloy Jiménez, and the Director of the Chair, Andrés Moya.
The FISABIO-University of Valencia Chair aims to promote and favour health and biomedical research in the Valencian region. This event will serve to present the activities planned for this year, among which it is worth mentioning the lectures by world-class researchers or the call for grants. In addition to Nombela, guest speakers include Professor Arturo Casadevall (Johns Hopkins University), Julio Frenk (Harvard University), Antonio Zorzano (director of the Molecular Medicine Programme of the IRB Barcelona Institute for Research in Biomedicine) and Fernando Baquero (scientific director of the Ramón y Cajal Hospital Foundation).
Scholarship-Awards for young researchers
Research grants awarded by this chair, aimed at undergraduate and postgraduate students, will involve a maximum stay of three months in one of the colleges of the University of California, an institution with which FISABIO cooperates in terms of biomedical research. As regards training, the Summer School in Biomedical Research and Public Health of the FISABIO Foundation will hold its sessions next summer as part of the chair.
Meeting point for dialogue
This year the FISABIO-University of Valencia Chair also aims to create the Biomedical Athenaeum. "We want this chair to be a meeting point and a place for discussion. For that, the Athenaeum will bring together specialists in the field, every two months at the Library of FISABIO, to discuss progress on scientific issues today", argues Director Andrés Moya, professor of Genetics at the University of Valencia.
Several Valencian biomedical researchers will be permanent members of the Athenaeum. "Also, attendees will discuss a research topic, usually presented by a guest preferably from biomedical centres in Valencia", says Moya, who reiterated that among the various missions of the FISABIO-University of Valencia Chair there is the will to become an engine for scientific and technical research and innovation, through the promotion of interaction between research teams.
