ICMol scientists publish a study on the developement of quantum computers

Researchers at the Institute for Molecular Science (ICMol) at Universitat de València’s Parc Científic, which is also attached to Instituto de Ciencia de Materiales de Aragón (ICMA), have published a new study on the development and optimization of quantum bits from magnetic molecules. This means a great contribution to the new information revolution since a step forward to develop the first quantum computer is being taken.

The study has been published in the journal Physical Review Letters, and it was started in the theses of the young researchers Salvador Cardona Serra, from ICMol, and María José Martínez Pérez, from ICMA. The results of this research, which is based on à la carte dessign of magnetic molecules with certain quantum properties, lead to the building of computer quantum architectures integrated in chips. These chips will be bigger than those existent and able to carry out more difficult tasks.

The goal of the project has been to ‘obtain a molecule which can be used as a quantum bit’, says Cardona. ‘It is the previous step to develop quantum computers which will be using the quantum physics laws to carry out operations in more effective way.’

Universities of Stuttgart and Nottingham have also taken part in this scientific study.
