La Nau hosts ‘Perifèries 11/12’, an art and culture research laboratory

'Perifèries 11/12' takes place at cultural centre La Nau.

Universitat de València’s cultural centre La Nau hosted yesterday, March 21st, and until March 31st the 4th edition of Perifèries 11/12, a series of conferences which aim to reflect and debate on the current cultural models, as well as to show the most innovative artistic proposals and projects in Spain. This encounter is being organized by Rafael Tormo i Cuenca since 2007 and is going to be opened today at 18:30.

Perifèries conferences are a platform for cultural debate and reflection, as well as a collective place for spreading the latest art trends. On this edition, experts Álvaro de los Ángeles and Eva Caro collaborate with the research team.

The slogan chosen for this fourth edition is ‘Hacer de una práctica colectiva una experiencia común’ (create a common experience from a collective practice). Perifèries is going to focus on the need to revise the most widespread cultural production models, trying to analyze the transformation ability of art and the role or artists in the society.

For this purpose, more than 30 experts are gathering in Valencia during 11 days that will make La Nau to become a hive of activity.

Lectures and working groups

The conference is structured around several theme sections, each of the having a guest expert who is opening the day with a lecture. These lectures are going to be the focus for discussion for the following round tables and working groups.

These are the invited experts: the science researcher Antonio Lafuente (CSIC’s Centro de Ciencias Humanas y Sociales), the thinker and activist, Jordi Claramonte (TABAKALERA), the culture and art projects’ entrepeneur Nekane Aramburu, the art critic David García Casado, the Musac’s director, Agustín Pérez Rubio, the artist and activist Daniel García Andújar, and the poet and essayist Antonio Méndez.

The working groups will operate on an ‘open space’ basis and will be supervised by the persons in charge of several Valencian, Spanish and European art projects. This projects are: ColaBoraBora (Bilbao), Tabakalera (Madrid), Iona Pergo (Murcia), Teresa Marín (Valencia), Llorenç Barber (Valencia), Lorenzo Sandoval (Berlín), Submergentes (Valencia), La Mutante (Valencia), Lalalab (Valencia), D. Arlandís and J. Marroquí (Valencia) y Lafundició (Barcelona).

Perifèries 11/12 opening is going to be celebrated today, March 21st, at 18:30 in La Nau’s Sala Thesaurus. The Vice-principal for Culture, Equality and Planning, Antonio Ariño, and Rafael Tormo, in charge of the project, are going to attend the ceremony. Then, Antonio Lafuente is going to give a lecture titled ‘La invisibilidad del procomún’.

Art projects and collaborations

Along with the lectures and workshops, some documentary showings are scheduled like the documentary by Santiago Sierra (NO Global Tour) and the Festival Nuevas Realidades Video-Políticas. The performance by Graham Bell: La Histeria (del Arte) Valenciano Siglo XX – EN CONSTRUCCIÓN! will also take place.

Moreover, the latest creations in the audiovisual festival, which initiative of Creaciones Intermedia of Universitat Politècnica de València’s Facultat de Belles Arts) will be also shown. Some of the art proposals received by MediaLab-Prado (Seny de carrer) will also be shown. This call is already open and some proposals from New York have already arrived.

Exhibition Perifèries 11/12

All the works produced during Perifèries 11/12 will be shown at Sala Thesaurus from April 1st to April 15th.
