Last Saturday, June 16th, Universitat de València’s Escola Coral La Nau celebrated its 10th anniversary with a concert. The musical event took place in Sala Charles Darwin at Burjassot-Paterna Campus at 12:00. Entrance is free but space is limited.
The concert had two parts. In the first one, only La Nau’s choirs sang: Mestral with children from four to six years old; Garbí, with children from six to nine, and Tramuntana, with children above ten. Adrià Gràcia played the piano and Mònica Perales conducted them. The choirs interpreted several songs from different places and authors.
The second part presented a selection of traditional Valencian songs, which were interpreted by the whole members of Escola Coral La Nau. The Filharmonic Orchestra of Universitat de València (conducted by Hilary García) played in this part. The recital started with the cycle Cuatro canciones populares, composed by Pascual Martínez, and it ended with the opening of Pequeña fantasía, which is based on traditional Valencian songs composed by Josep Ramon Gil Tàrrega. This last piece was interpreted by the choir and by the choirs in the towns of Aldaia, Almansa and Puerto de Sagunto.
Escola Coral La Nau was created in 2002, and Mònica Perales is its first conductor. The goal of this choir is to offer musical training to children under the Universitat’s framework. More than 400 children have already been at the choir school.
During 2011-2012, 70 children have rehearsed weekly divided in three groups: Mestral choir, Garbí choir and Tramuntana choir.
The rehearsals are usually in Rector Peset hall of residence, where most of the concerts have taken place as well. The choir has also sung in other buildings of Universitat de València like Auditori Joan Plaça in Jardí Botànic, La Nau’s Capella de la Sapiència, and Sala Charles Darwin in Bujassot-Paterna Campuss. It has had concert at other places outside UV: Auditorio TAMA de Aldaia, Sagunt’s Roman theatre, Palau de la Música de Valencia and Palacio de las Artes Reina Sofía, among others.
From 2003, the Escola Coral La Nau organizes an annual meeting with other choir schools like Schola Cantorum from Aldaia, Escuela Coral from Unión Musical de Almansa and Escuela de Música Camp de Morvedre. They join to sing together and these meetings have led them to interpret Las tres locomotoras by Reimund Hess, Issunboshi y La quimera del tiempo by Diego Alamar, El Paje Saguntino by Josep R. Gil-Tàrrega, Érase una vez en Almansa by Sonia Megías, El origen de las nubes by Josep R. Gil-Tàrrega, Definitio de Juan Luis Martínez and El pájaro dorado by Frederic Mompou, among other pieces.
