Universitat de València took part in the last edition of Primer Corte de la Miel, which was celebrated in Ayora between 11 and 14 October. José Vicente Falcó, lecturer of zoology, gave a lecture at the opening ceremony which was titled ‘Abejas e insectos-plaga asociados: una visión actual de la problemática’ (bees and pest insects: insights on the current problems).
This initiative takes place thanks to the cooperation between Universitat de València and the local Valencian entities, which, through the Office of the Vice-Principal for Participation and Territorial Projection, are increasing the university’s presence in the local societies.
One more year, Ayora held its traditional beekeeping, gastronomic, touristic and trade fair, which is called El Primer Corte de la Miel. Among other things, the people attending could watch how the extraction of the honey is done.
Universitat de València took part in this fair by means of a master lecture on the decreasing of the bee communities by a UV’s expert on the subject.
The lecturer pointed out that from the 60s the bee communities are decreasing in Europe and North America, a fact which is known as ‘Beehives Depopulation Syndrome’. José Vicente Falcó explained the causes for this and reviewed the present situation.
José Vicente Anaya, Ayora’s mayor, explained that ‘the lecture has been very interesting for the people attending the fair, since this topic is closely linked to our region Valle de Ayora-Cofrentes.’
The UV’s collaboration is carried out thanks to the Office of the Vice-Principal for Participation and Territorial Projection’s programme to increase the presence of the university in the local Valencian entities.
