Lecturer Justo Serna has been awarded the Manuel Alvar award for humanistic studies 2012 thanks to his essay ‘La imaginación histórica. Ensayo sobre novelistas españoles contemporáneos’ (The historical imagination. Essay on the contemporary Spanish novelists). Fundación José Manuel Lara awards this prize which is worth 12,000. Serna is a full university professor of contemporary history at Universitat de València.
The panel of judges has considered the ‘originality of its approach aimed at revealing the relation between reality and fiction in the work of five Spanish novelists (Luis Landero, Arturo Pérez Reverte, Eduardo Mendoza, Antonio Muñoz Molina y Javier Cercas). All this from the point of view of history’.
Justo Serna is full professor of contemporary history at Universitat de València. He is an expert in cultural history and historiography. He has written several books as Pasados ejemplares: historia y narración en Antonio Muñoz Molina (Biblioteca Nueva, 2004) or Héroes alfabéticos: por qué hay que leer novelas (PUV, 2008). He has cooperated with other full professor at Universitat de València, Anaclet Pons, in order to study the Valencian bourgeoisie, which led to books like Diario de un burgués (Los libros de la memoria, 2006) o Los triunfos del burgués (Tirant lo Blanch, 2011).
