Mathematical analysis, prime numbers and Science challenges, this Thursday at La Nau

Poster of the Mathematical Olympiad.

This Thursday, 27 March, the Cultural Centre La Nau hosts two conferences at 19:00. At the Paranimf, the Col•legi Major Sant Joan de Ribera de Burjassot continues its activities to mark its centenary with the conference «Does freedom really exist? The challenges of science to common sense». And in the Aula Magna it will take place the commemorative conference «The mathematical analysis and the prime numbers», by Professor José Bonet, full university professor at the Universitat Politècnica de València, with the participation of Rafael Crespo, dean of the Faculty of Mathematics of the University of Valencia, and Antonio Campollo, president of the Royal Mathetamical Society, in a conference celebrated to mark the Mathematical Olympiads held in Requena.

The roundtable discussion «Does freedom really exist? The challenges of science to common sense» can be followed live from MediaUni (http://mediauni.uv.es/tv), with the participation of Carlos J. Moya, full university professor of Philosophy at the University of Valencia; José I. Corbí, full university professor of Philosophy at the University of Valencia; Valeriano Iranzo, tenured professor of Logic and Philosophy of Science at the University of Valencia, and José Miñarro López, full university professor of Psychobiology at the University of Valencia, and will be presented by the Vice‐Principal for Culture Anotnio Ariño.

The image of the reality, and especially of ourselves and our peers, which we take for granted in our daily lives, is very different from the ones projected by natural sciences. The conflict between science and common sense is very old and is already found in the Greek philosophy; however, it was remarkably worsened with the rise of astronomy and mathematical physics in the modern age and, already in 19th century, with the development of evolutionary and neo-Darwinian biology; to these scientific advances has joined, more recently, the rapid progress of neuroscience. The purpose of the roundtable discussion is to analyse the relationships between both conceptions of reality.

Meanwhile, the Aula Magna, full university professor José Bonet will talk abou mathematics and the curiosity aroused by the prime numbers. With this talk, the University joins the fiftieth edition of the Mathematical Olympiads held this week in Requena. The International Mathematical Union, gathering the experience of some countries, especially in Eastern Europe, in holding competitions for students of batxillerat, to whom the Royal Mathematical Spanish Society joined in 1964. Currently, after the different phases of the different university districts done in January, in Requena seventy representatives from the autonomous communities meet to appoint, after a competition in which they propose six problems, the six boys or girls who form the Spanish team which will represent us in the Olympic Games in Cape Town (Republic of South Africa), in July 2014.

The choice of Requena to hold the fiftieth edition is a reward to the teachers of secondary of its two public schools, headed by Professor Antonio Ledesma (president of the organising committee) who always achieves placing, at least, a person among the team of the Valencian Country, who also obtain good results in the rest of the mathematical competitions.
