UV’s Palau de Cerveró hosts from today, October 4, the cinema cycle titled ‘Cal.ligrafies de la malaltia’ (Calligraphy of diseases). This cycle is organized by the Institute of Medicine and Science History López Piñeiro, adscribed both to CSIC and UV, and the Cinema Club at the university. It is organized under the framework of the temporary exhibition of the same name which is an idea of the Office of the Vice-Principal for Culture and Equality and by the above mentioned institute. Ricard Huerta, organizer, is the head of the University Institute of Creativity and Educational Innovations.
The cycle will take two months, from October to November, and is staring tomorrow, October 4, with the showing of the short movie Ressonàncies magnètiques (Isaki Lacuesta, Spain, 2003) and other related audio-visual documents. Two weeks later, on October 18, we will watch En la ciudad sin límites (Antonio Hernández, Spain and Argentina, 2002). Next Thursday, October 25, The Pillow Book (Peter Greenaway, United Kingdom, France, The Netherlands, and Luxembourg, 1995) will be screened. On Thursday, November 8, the film Ying Xiong (Hero) (Zhang Yimou, Hong Kong, China, 2002) will close the programme.
The screenings will take place on Thursday at 18:00 in the conference hall of Palau de Cerveró. The films are in the original version with subtitles in Spanish. Every session will be introduced by the Cinema Club and will have a debate afterwards, when the audience may participate. The cycle presents calligraphy as an element of visual culture. It rediscovers its artistic value in a time when it has been superseded by new technologies.
In the first session, Ressonàncies magnètiques is a scientific documentary studying the creation of aesthetic experiences in the brain. Man Ray’s films will be screened next. The session will be ended with the work by artist Hugh Turvey.
In the second session, the film En la ciudad sin límites takes us to a family drama around the figure of an ill father. Next Thursday’s film, The Pillow Book, presents writing on the human skin as a sensory experience.
Finally, on November 8, the film Ying Xiong (Hero) will be shown. It is a chivalresque film where the Chinese calligraphy is very important.
