The Philharmonic Orchestra takes part in a cooperation project with Central American musicians in Honduras

A group of musicians in the Universitat’s Philharmonic Orchestra, including a trumpet player, a horn player, an oboist, and the conductor, are taking part in the annual meeting organized by the Joven Orquesta y Coro de Centro América (the Central American Youth Orquestra and Choir, JOCCA) in Honduras from 4 to 16 September.

Music may become a tool for cooperation and solidarity. This was proved last year when the UV Philharmonic Orchestra’s conductor, Hilary García, attended the annual workshop of the Palestine Youth Orquestra (PYO) during the month of August. There was a double goal: improving the musicians’ orchestral practice and offering a professional orchestra to the Palestinian public. After that experience, this year is the turn of Honduras.

Throughout the academic year 2010-2011, UV’s Philharmonic Orchestra had already established a cooperation agreement with JOCCA, a NGO sited in Valencia and directed by David Gálvez since it was created in 2008 to coordinate the different youth Central American orchestras. This cooperation between the two institutions becomes consolidated.

According to Hilari García, ‘music is a socializing tool not only for the musicians playing in them but also for the audience in the concerts. This is the philosophy inspiring the JOCCA’s gatherings and we, the Philharmonic Orchestra, share as well.’

The JOCCA’s main activity is its annual gathering where the young musicians from the different Central American orchestras prepare a common programme directed by teachers coming mostly from Valencia. This time, the musicians from Valencia will be collaborating in the courses to be carried out during the month of September and they will offer two joint concerts with the Central American musicians as well. The host institution will be the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de Honduras, which already has a collaboration agreement with Universitat de València.
