Manuel Cruz, Professor of Contemporary Philosophy at the University of Barcelona, inaugurated today the Master of Human Rights, Democracy and International Justice, organised by the Faculty of Law and the Institute for Human Rights of the University of Valencia (HDI) and that initiates its fifth edition. His latest book is " Philosopher of Guard '(2013).

Through its partnerships in the media, Professor Manuel Cruz has become the "headline philosopher " of the Spanish newspapers El Pais, La Vanguardia and El Periódico, and the Argentine newspapers Clarin and La Nacion, as well as the program "La Ventana " in Cadena SER.

The conference, entitled "Human rights: from political theology to economic theology" will take place in the salón de grados of the Faculty of Law, located in the Tarongers Campus , at 17:30. The philosopher will be presented by Professor Cristina Garcia Pascual, director of the master's degree and by Professor Javier de Lucas. From his position of "philosopher of guard", Manuel Cruz will explain how we pass from some dogmatisms to some others , from the ideological ones to the supposedly scientific-economic dogmas, avoiding any possibility of criticism and self-criticism.

Professor Manuel Cruz has obtained the Premios de ensayo Anagrama (Anagrama Test Awards) (2005), Espasa (2010) and the Premio internacional Jovellanos (Jovellanos International Award) (2012). He has developed a solid academic work, embodied in more than thirty books and a large number of publications in scientific journals, which have not prevented him to participate extensively in public debates and develop a strong work as information disseminator . And thus, regarding the role that philosophy should have in contemporary society, he claims that "I would content myself if it is used to introduce some kind of rationality and sanity in a situation that is increasingly drifting toward the absurd, with no more criteria sense from those in power that the short-term electoral calculation. "

The Human Rights, Democracy and International Justice Ph.D programme of the University of Valencia has received from the Ministry of Education the Excellence Mention, which has been given only to eight master's degree in the legal field  in Spain . In addition, the Institute for Human Institute of the University of Valencia received an aid under the Consolider-Ingenio 2010 program for a project in which twelve different research groups from Spanish universities participate, being coordinated by the Institute for Human Rights  Bartolome de las Casas of the University Carlos III in Madrid. It was the first time that a team of researchers from the legal field received this kind of aid, which is mainly aimed at scientific contexts away from the Humanities and Social Sciences.
