The Faculty of Economics of Universitat de València organised a debate on the future of the Valencian banking system and the model of Caixa Popular, among political representatives of the political parties and professor Vanessa Campos i Climent and Joan Ramon Sanchis Palacio, authors of the book “Caixa Popular: a social and different cooperative banking model”. The book presentation and the debate will be celebrated at the Assembly Hall on Monday at 12:00h, at a gathered event which will be presented by the dean of the Faculty of Economics, Vicent Soler.
The panel discussion will be moderated by Rosa Yagüe, vice-dean for participation and culture and, together with the authors of the book, it will have the participation of Manuel Illueca, professor of the UJI, in representation of PSPV-PSOE; Enric Morera, Compromís representative; David Llácer, member of the economics field of Esquerra Unida; Enrique Montes; autonomous secretary of the Conselleria d’Hisenda, representing PP; Narciso Estellés, second place of the candidacy of Ciudadanos for the City Council; as well as a Podemos representative, to be confirmed.
The book of professors Campos and Sanchis-Palacio will help as a link to the debate, simultaneously published in Valencian and Spanish. It describes the trajectory of Caixa Popular throughout its almost 40 years of history, and it analyses its business model from an external and professional point of view. Due to his co-operative condition of associated work and of second degree, explains professor Sanchis Palacio “its model is based on democracy and co-operation, being different from the rest of the banks and tills”. It is, he recalls, a “bank which is governed by its workers, in its condition of work partners, and for its client co-operatives, as associated co-operatives; which it gives it a very evident distinguishing nature”. Furthermore, he added, “Caixa Popular managed to survive at solvent economic conditions, and it performed a key task in the development of cooperativism of Valencian associated work, consulting and orienting other cooperatives in its creation and subsequent growth, besides from sponsoring its activities”.
The work was published by Vincle, a Valencian editorial initiative specialised in business literature with which the Faculty of Economics of Universitat de València collaborates, with the aim to contribute to the analysis and spread of hit cases of solid enterprises with implementation in the Valencian Region, which refer to several sectors of the national or international economic activity.
Vanessa Campos is a professor of the Department of Business Administration and a researcher of the Institute of Research in Social Economics, Cooperativism and Undertaking (IUDESCOOP) of Universitat de València. Joan Ramon Sanchis-Palacio is a full university professor of the same department, Director of IUDESCOOP and of the University Mater’s degree in Social Economics of Universitat de València. Among other books, he published “The banking we need” and, together with Vanessa Fields, he is the co-author of “The With model”, also published by Vincle.
