Professor Antonio Pellicer, Dean in the Universitat de València’s Facutat de Medicina i Odontologia, has been appointed new academician in the Academia Médico-Quirúrgica Española. The event took place last January the 31st, during the opening session of the 2011-2012 academic year in Madrid. Pellicer is also president of the Instituto Valenciano de Infertilidad (IVI) and head of the Departamento de Ginocología y Obstetricia of the Valencian hospital La Fe.
The event took place in the conference hall of the Universitat Complutense de Madrid’s Facultad de Medicina. Antonio Pellicer explained that ‘he enters the academy wishing to maintain and extend its prestige.’ During his acceptance speech, he recalled one of the most important events in modern medicine: the birth of the first baby conceived in a test tube in 1978. ‘Nowadays, in vitro fertilization is a common alternative, meaning 3 to 5% of the babies born in the world’, stressed one of the most prestigious experts on this area globally. He has received many prizes, including prize Rey Jaime I for Research. Lately, he is in charge of the journal Fertility and Sterility as well, being the first person outside North America to hold this post.
He also admitted that entering the academy as a permanent academician was two times pride for him because there had been many prestigious gynaecologists in the institution previously and because this recognition came from Madrid. In fact, he expressed his will to organize a joint event with this institution and another one which he is part of as well, the Real Academia de Medicina de Valencia.
