Salvador Roca is appointed new director of Universitat de València’s Servei d’Informàtica

The Universitat de València’s Principal, Esteban Morcillo, has appointed Salvador Roca new director of the UV’s information systems department. The position takes effect from May the 1st. The information systems department has the goal of maintaining and updating the institution’s computer resources in order to assist the management, administration, teaching and research at Universitat de València. Roca will replace José Antonio Vázquez in the position.

Salvador Roca Marquina has a degree in physics from Universitat de València. He has been lecturer in the Escuela Universitaria de Informática at Universitat Politècnica de València. He has been part of the information systems department for more than 25 years, where he has worked as an anylist, systems technician and deputy director. He has helped to develop management applications like students registration or personnel payroll management. He has also been a database administrator and head of the systems and information services group, among other services where he has had a leading role. Since 2002, he is the coordinator of the project ‘Secretaría Virtual’ (virtual secretariat), and from the project’s beginning he leads the virtual classroom’s supporting group. This last project was awarded by the EU’s Social Council in 2006.

From 2007, he coordinates the supercomputing supporting team, which he has integrated in the systems’ group and in the administration of intensive computing equipment such as Tirant (integrated in the Supercomputing Spanish Network) or Lluís Vives, the current supercomputer at the informations system department.

He has taken part in several UV’s activities. He has been advisor for some university management processes, he has been a member of the work team in charge of designing the strategic plan of the university in 2006, and he has been part of an assessement committee charged to award some TICs projects grants. He actively takes part in teaching activities related to new technologies, applications and information systems both at the university and other public institutions. In 2010, he tought at the Universitat de València’s master’s degree ‘Sistemas y Servicios de la Sociedad de la Información’.

Finally, he has given many lectures at different meetings such as RedIRIS in 2007, V Congreso de Aplicación de las Nuevas Tecnologías en la Docencia Presencial y E-learning at Universidad Cardenal Herrera-CEU in 2006, or at Foro Hispano de .LRN y Software Libre Educativo in 2005 in Madrid. He also was one of the organizers of the 7th OPENACS conference in 2008, which took place at Universitat de València. He has been at different round tables - Congreso de la Ingeniería Informática de la Comunidad Valenciana -, and seminars and courses of the master’s degree ‘Dirección y Producción’ at Instituto de Formación de Directivos (IFEDE) in CESEM, Valencia -.
