Popular and festive music to star this weekend in Patriarca Square, as a closure of the festival Serenates. Two free concerts organized with the City Council at 9.30pm. The bands Urbàlia Rurana and La Romàntica del Saladar on Saturday, and the singer Pep el Botifarra accompanied by Jove Banda Simfónica on Sunday starred.
Urbàlia Rurana and La Romàntica del Saladar performed together for the first time in 2000 in a multitudinous concert in the Bullring in Valencia. This time, they offered a traditional and festivity repertoire, conceived for the eve of the ideal town celebrations: pasacalles, waltzes, jotas, marchas moras, balls de rotgle, pasodobles and other popular rhythms.
Urbàlia Rurana, formed in 1990, is a Valencian and Mediterranean band which gives concerts and public open-air dances. Based on Valencian popular tunes and songs, they are open to other European Mediterranean influences. The band has given concerts and dances throughout the Valencian Community, performing in numerous towns and cities in Spain, and in countries such as France, Portugal, Germany, England and especially Italy, where they shared the stage with the Piedmonts' musician Maurizio Martinotti.
For its part, La Romàntica de Saladar was formed in 1994. Many members had already played together in other bands from the Marina region. Differentiating themselves from charanga and metal bands, they were soon playing nice, danceable tunes and sobremesa songs in Saladar beach in Xàbia. La Romàntica usually collaborates in the organization of Xàbiafolk festival, and has performed in Festacarrer in Ondara and el Cant al Ras in Massalfassar.
REVIVING THE TRADITION
The flamenco singer from Xátiva, Josep Gimeno, who is better known as ‘Pep el Botifarra’, was the star of the concert concluding the festival Serenates on Sunday. He started his career in the 80s with the band Sarau de la Costera, with whom he recorded Balls y cançons de la Costera, which meant a recognition for him within the Valencian traditional music given its quality. He has always been interested in the recovery of oral songs from his region and he has also collaborated with numerous artists not only of popular music, but also with rock bands and singer-songwriters.
In 2012, he recorded his fourth solo album, ‘Botifarra a banda’, in which he joins the two Valencian musical universes par excellence, music band and traditional string rondalla. This is the basis of the concert on Sunday night, in which he was accompanied with the Jove Banda Simfònica of the Federación de Sociedades Musicales of the Valencian Community.
