Student protest against 3+2 reform for Higher Education

Pancarta que obria la manifestació.

University and High School students protested against 3+2 reform for Higher Education this week. On Thursday, thousands of people participated at a demonstration which started from the Faculty of Geography and History of Universitat de València. The strike day has only recorded an isolated incident at Campus dels Tarongers.

O els seus privilegis o la nostra dignitat”, meaning “either their privileges or our dignity”. This was the sentence of the banner, which headed the demonstration, which teaching and PAS representatives of the Universitat de València also joined.

The Assamblea General d’Estudiants (General Student Assembly, AGE) board of Universitat de València and different student trades union had called the recognition day. The AGE had settled the reasons for the protests in writing: “To defend public education, quality and in our language”. It followed: “It is outrageous to verify that before the current implementation of a system of grades, the university degrees lasted 3 or 5 years with a more economic cost for the students. Nowadays, with the proposed model by the Ministry, we would pay three years course of grade and two more years as a Master’s degree course cost, which is the cost that goes from 1,300€ to 10,000€ (just the first enrolment)”.

A picket line threw smoke canisters at three classes of the Aulario Norte (North Classrooms Building) of the Campus dels Tarongers, at midday on Thursday. This situation suggested the closing of such building in order to avoid more incidents. A security guard suffered, as a stress consequence, an anxiety attack; so he was taken to a sanitary centre. This is the only remarkable incident of a demanding and pacific day.
