Tributes to professors Rafael Ballarín, Law, and Jordi Pérez Durá, Language Studies

The University of Valencia pays tribute on Thursday (21 February) to Rafael Ballarín, civil law professor, who died in September 2012, and Jordi Pérez Durá, Classical Philology professor, who is retiring.The Pérez Durá tribute will begin at 12:00 at his Faculty, and Ballarín's tribute will start at 18:30 at the Paraninfo of La Nau.Both events will be attended by principal Esteban Morcillo.

The tribute to Jordi Pérez Durá will also include speeches by the Dean of the Faculty, Carles Padilla and professors Jose Maria Estellés and Ferran Grau.An issue of the journal 'Studia Philologica Valentina' dedicated to Jordi Pérez Durá. will also be introduced.

Jordi Pérez Durá (1942) is currently emeritus professor at the University of Valencia.His professional life has been devoted entirely to teaching and research at the University of Valencia, where he joined as pre-tenured lecturer in 1964.

Durà opened in the Department of Classical Languages his research line on Neolatin Studies of the Valencian Country, showing his students how Latin, its language, literature, and culture did not cease to exist with the ancient world, but represented a splendid continuum throughout history and was one of the pillars of the world where we live.

He has published and overseen dissertations on Valencian humanism and enlightenment, with texts dedicated to personalities such as Joan Pere Olivier, Joan Andreu Strany, Vincent Marinero, Joan Pere Nunyes, Andreu Sempere, Jaume Joan Falcó or Mateu AimericHe has primarily dealt with the works of Joan Lluís Vives.

The tribute to Rafael Ballarín will also include speeches by Maria Elena Olmos, Dean of the Faculty of Law; Vicent Soler, dean of the Faculty of Economics, Emilia Adam, dean of the Col•legi Autonòmic de Registradors; Pedro Viguer, Valencia's Chief Justice, Joaquin Borrell; ex-dean of the Col•legi Notarial, and Dolores Mas, professor of Civil Law.

Rafael Ballarín devoted a lifetime of study and work at the University of Valencia, where he said he "discovered professional happiness."He trained in its classrooms. He obtained his chair at the Department of Civil Law in 1986, and taught at the Faculty of Economics and Law. When required to do so, he helped manage the institution: as vice-dean, chairman of the Library and Cultural Affairs committees of the Faculty of Law. In other institutions outside the university: he was board member at the public exam's court to the Notary's office, member of the Valencian Board of Consumption at the regional Ministry of Health and Consumption and the Committees on Rules and Regulations of the Board of Consumption.

Along with other colleagues he founded in the 70s the first Valencian Consumer Association, known today as AVACU, evidence of his social commitment. Among his publications the following stand out: his monographs on 'La hipoteca (génesis de su estudio y función)’, (1980), and ‘El cobro de lo indebido’ (1985).
