Universitat de València is ready to start its summer cultural programme of Centre del Carme

A past edition of Serenates festival.

Next Monday, June 25th, Universitat de València begins its summer cultural programme in Centre del Carme with the musical festival Serenates. The rehabilitation works being conducted at La Nau cultural centre require moving the summer programme, which used to be celebrated in La Nau’s cloister, to other location. Following agreement with the Consorcio de Museos de la Comunitat Valenciana, the Centre El Carme is going to be the place to host this programme.

This agreement also enables to keep the programme of the traditional Serenates festival. This festival is being conducted since the 80s and gathers about a thousand people each year. However, the organization has had to cancel the popular ‘Nit de Sant Joan’ celebration.

The new edition of Serenates festival, co-organized by Universitat de València and Instituto Valenciano de la Música, is having place from June 25th to 30th, and it is going to take place in Centre del Carme’s Gothic cloister. Universitat de València’s Orchestra Filharmonica is opening the programme, which is also having Harmonia del Parnàs, Spanish Brass Luur Metalls with Pep Gimeno “Botifarra”, Capella de Ministres, and the choir Orfeón Universitario de Valencia.

Nits de Cinema, another film festival withing this programme, is taking place in Centre del Carme as well. From July 16th to 26th, this event, which is organized by Universitat de València’s Aula de Cinema, cellebrates a new edition. Two cinema cycles, screened in the evening and in original version make up the festival. This year’s cycles are ‘Rock’n cinema’ and ’50 anys sense Marilyn’. The first is showing a retrospective view of the relationship between rock and cinema through different films and genres. For the second, Aula de Cinema and Filmoteca del IVAC have joined to celebrate the passing away of Marilyn Monroe screening her films. This last cycle is taking place in Centre del Carme in July and in Filmoteca d’Estiu in August.

Despite the works being done, some of La Nau’s facilities will host the summer programme of Universitat de València. The theatre company Escena Erasmus is having the premiere, on July 3rd and 4th, of its new work ‘Lorca, Calderón y los estudiantes de Babel’ in Sala Matilde Salvador. This work has won, for its third year in a row, the prize Las Huellas de la Barraca 2012, organized by the national organization Acción Cultural Española. In the same hall, from July 16th to 19th, the percussion festival, Percute, organized by the percussion band Amores, with the cooperation of IVM, is taking place as well.
