The Global Change Unit of the Image Processing Laboratory (LPI) of Universitat de València, in the Science Park of the institution, has just made available for the international scientific community a new Geoportal. The platform processes and facilitates images of the earth’s surface, coming both from Meteosat satellite and from NASA satellites, and offers the opportunity of obtaining thematic parameters and elaborated products of interest for the user. Internationally, no platform provides data from these satellites with Geoportal’s speed.
The images, captured by SEVIRI sensors (on board of the Meteosat Second Generation) and MODI (on board of NASA Terra and Aqua satellites) and acquired through aerials installed in LPI, offer samples every 15 minutes, in the case of SEVIRI of the changes in the vegetation rate or in the sea and earth’s surface temperatures, among other parameters; and offer about six deliveries per day of MODIS products such as the content of water vapour in the atmosphere, emissivity, or the reflectance of earth’s surface, among others. And they do that at an almost real time, employing less than five hours.
Geoportal is the result of an initiative of José Antonio Sobrino, full university professor of Earth Physics and director of the Global Change Unit, which traces back to 1996 when the bases to acquire the first aerials were established. The platform is consolidated with the project CEOS-SPAIN, that finishes this year, in the framework of the National R&D Plan of the Ministry for Science and Innovation. “As well as producing thematic maps from the captured images, the interest resides in the validation of the data provided through measures carried out in the Doñana Biological Reserve and in the experimental plots of the Provincial Agronomic Technical Institute of Albacete (ITAP), located in the municipal area of Barrax”, indicates Sobrino. “The precission in the results facilitates remote sensing applications in fields as diverse as climatology, agronomy, biology or geology, among others”, he adds.
It started up a year ago on a trial basis, and after an inversion of almost one million euros, the platform launches through the web http://ceosspain.lpi.uv.es/ once finished the processing chain of images.
