The Principal has presented in La Nau’s main hall the book ‘La Universitat de València y sus entornos naturales’ (Universitat and its natural parks), which focus on the nature reserves of La Albufera, Turia, and Sierra Calderona. This work compiles the exhibition panels on the Valencian nature reserves which have been exhibited in more than 30 towns from the end of 2011 to this moment. The book is an idea by the Office of the Vice-Principal for Participation and Territorial Projection.
The Vice-Principal for Participation and Territorial Projection Jorge Hermosilla, the minister in the Valencian government for Infrastructures Isabel Bonig, the person in charge of the edition Jorge Catalá, and the representative of the several exhibitions Ángel Morales have attended the presentation.
Esteban Morcillo has stressed that both the book and the previous exhibitions ‘represent the Universitat’s wish to go beyond its three campuses, the interest in transferring knowledge to the local entities and the aim of bringing the university closer to the citizens.’ He reminded that these last years, Universitat de València is making an effort to give relevance to its committment with territorial projection.’ Moreover, he has alluded to the budget cuts affecting the universities and has said that ‘investing in education is not an expenditure since the university creates wealth and brings the investment back through cultivated people.’ He has pointed out that the university creates more than two third parts of scientific knowledge.
The work is a collective book which tries to promote the values of these Valencian parks in order to contribute to their preservation. It also tries to reflect the experience of university researchers, bring the university closer to the Valencian towns, and offer the citizens a way to rediscover these environmental treasures.
‘La Universitat de València y sus entornos naturales: Los Parques Naturales de l’Albufera, el Túria y la Sierra Calderona’ is a catalogue of the three first exhibitions carried out by the Office of the Vice-Principal for Participation and Territorial Projection during 2011-12 academic year. The exhibited panels have been made by researchers: biologists, chemists, geographers and art historicians, etc. The publication also includes an extended version of the texts, with added information and a deeper analysis of the topics related to the nature parks near the city of Valencia.
‘La Universitat de València y sus entornos natural’ is a multidisciplinary work which has had the cooperation of lecturers, technicians, and experts in nature reserves. The 288 pages of the book gather many studies on the flora and fauna, the waters, the environmental values, the production activities, problems and specific threats to the parks.
