Universitat de València’s Principal asks the Government representative to drop the charges against the students and informs her on the university unrest at the police conduct

The Universitat de València’s Principal, Esteban Morcillo, asked the Government representative, Paula Sánchez de León, to drop the charges against the students arrested in the past few days. At the request of Sánchez de León, they had a meeting at the Government representative’s office last February 22th. The Principal also informed her on the unrest of the university community (unions, centres, departments, etc.) at the police conduct in the past few days. The Universitat Politècnica’s Principal, Juan Julià, attended the meeting as well.

The Principal stressed the important values of public education and public university, particularly within an economic recession context, and he pointed out the university community’s commitment to maintain a good-quality public higher education.

Finally, he asked for the restoration of dialogue, and he reiterated the universities’ role as a plural space for communication. ‘There is no university without students’, he concluded.

Prior to the Government representative’s meeting, the Principal met with the unions CCOO, STEPV, UGT and CSIF to sign an agreement. During the event, the unions’ representatives showed their concern about the conduct of the police at the recent protest marches.
