The Universitat de València’s Principal Esteban Morcillo and the Chairman of Associació Química i Mediambiental del Sector Químic de la Comunitat Valenciana (Quimacova) Miguel Burdeos have signed a cooperation agreement. Both institutions will collaborate bringing the companies of the Valencian chemical sector closer and developing research and innovation.

This agreement’s goal is to reaffirm the R&D&i of the chemical companies at the Valencian Community. It was created last year with the celebration of ‘QUÍMICA FUSIÓ’, an event celebrating the International Year of Chemistry and promoting companies innovation. The Vice-Principal for Scientific Policy Pedro Carrasco has pointed out that ‘Universitat de València has interesting capacities for the chemical sector, both regarding equipment and R&D.’

The Principal Esteban Morcillo has expressed the importance of the Valencian chemical sector and the excellence of the research activities of Universitat de València regarding this field: ‘The studies of chemistry at our university have a long tradition and its research has an outstanding place in the international scientific community.’

The chemical sector in the Valencian Community invoices more than 4,000 milions of Euros. This fact makes it the fourth production sector of the Valencian economy. It uses more than 12,000 people and consists of about 450 companies, most of them SMEs.

Just before the signing of the agreement, Quimacova has visited the Science Park’s facilities, where more than ten Valencian chemical companies have been able to find out the offer of this institution. Equally, the Office for the Transfer of Research Results -OTRI- has presented the technological offer regarding the chemical sector.

The companies have visited the support service Servei Central de Suport a la Investigació Experimental (SCSIE), where they have found out some of the equipment the Universitat de València offers for the university community and for companies.

For Quimacova’s chairman Miguel Burdeos ‘this agreement is a step forward to take advantage of the innovation resources we have at the Valencian Community. It also brings university and companies together. We hope the agreement leads to the application of new technologies.’

Associació Química i Mediambiental del Sector Químic de la Comunitat Valenciana (Quimacova) is made up of 120 associations in all the fields of chemistry: basic, consumption and health. Nowadays, these 120 companies have more than 4,100 employees and invoice 2,600 milions of Euros.

According to Federació Empresarial de la Indústria Química Espanyola (FEIQUE), the Valencian Community has the 14% of the chemical industry of Spain, thus being the second following Catalonia with the 30%. The largest concentration of the sector is in the Valencian Community: it has more than 12,000 employees and is made of 450 companies.
