Two companies of the Science Park of the Universitat de València have been awarded in the 3rd Edition of the 5U-CV STARTUP Contest. The biotechnology company Epidisease won the first prize and Nothingbutnet, of the ICT sector, finished on the third place. In the category Startup Junior, COOKERS, a project which started in the Universitat de València, was the winner. The contest is a joint initiative of five Valencian public universities and the Valencian Government which is devoted to promote the entrepreneurship and innovation in the university area.

The biotechnology company Epidisease, located in the Science Park of the Universitat de València, has won the 5U-CV STARTUP Contest which is organised by five Valencian public universities with the support of the Conselleria de Economía Sostenible, Sectores Productivos, Comercio y Trabajo (Valencian Department of Sustainable Economy, Productive Sectors, Business and Work) in the framework of the programme ‘Campus of the Innovative Entrepreneur’. The capacity of innovation and the viability of the company, which is devoted to giving solutions to human diseases using Epigenetics -the study of the influence of the environment and the history of an individual in the gene expression-, have been the key factors that have led to the choice of the company as the winner of the contest.

Created two years ago by a team of researchers with experience in the area of Epigenetics and the study of biomarkers, Epidisease has been awarded with different prizes and recognitions. In 2013 it was awarded in the first National Competition of Young Entrepreneurs (INJUVE); in 2014, it was granted the prize ‘Best Company’ in the category R&D&I, of Emprenjove (IVAJ); and in 2015, it was selected in the announcement VLC/Campus Start Up, which led to its arrival to the Science Park of the Universitat de València. The company has also been selected by the Foundation for Innovation and Foresight Studies in Health in Spain (FIPSE) to participate in the programme Global LinQ Idea2 of the Massachusets Institute of Technology (MIT).

Devoted to promote the culture of innovation among the university students and to encourage business projects and startups, the contest establishes two categories -Startup and Startup Junior- and eight prizes, which will distribute € 20,250 to a lost fund.

The third prize of the first category has been granted to another enterprise in the Science Park, Nothingbutnet, an startup devoted to the development of new technologies and applications to improve the performance of sport players and to optimise the efficiency of federations and sports clubs. In addition to being a member of the group of companies that have been selected in the VLC/Campus/ Start Up 2015, Nothingbutnet has been the winner of the European edition of the Global Sport Innovation Competition this year, held in the University of Trent (Italy). This has made this company the representative of Europe in this competition and in the framework of the last Olympic Games of Rio de Janeiro.

The first prize in the category Startup Junior has been for the business project COOKERS, a multilateral platform of collaborative economy for its application in the gastronomic tourism. It is an initiative which was created in the Universitat de València and set in motion by the students of the YUZZ programme in the framework of the EMPREN + programme to support university entrepreneurs, promoted and coordinated by the Office of the Vice-Principal for Research and Science Policy of this academic institution.
