The University Foundation and Universia start a support programme for disabled university students

During the signing.

Universitat de València’s General Foundation (FGUV) and the Fundación Universia have signed a collaboration agreement to establish a support programme aimed at disabled university students. The goal is to offer personalized assistance for their integration in the university. The programme will be implemented at Universitat de València.

This programme tries, on one hand, to encourage academic development and autonomy of disabled students at this university, and on the other hand, to promote social integration of students in the university community.

The students object of the programme will have an academic monitoring to reinforce their potential. Some accessibility measures will be planned, and they will be encouraged to use their social skills to improve their personal relations.

Esteban Morcillo, UV’s Principal and president of the UV’s General Foundation, and Ramon Capdevilla, president of Fundación Universia, have signed the agreement. Other people were present at the event: Silvia Barona, Vice-Principal for Communication and Institutional Relations and executive vice-president of FGUV; FGUV’s manager, Cristóbal Suria; the head of Unit for the Integration of Disabled People, Celeste Asensi; and Maite Fernández-Reinares, in charge of the institutional relations at Fundación Universia.

Universitat de València is very committed with this idea and it develops different initiatives which go from adapted sport to assistance in teaching. Attention to disabled people is one important part in the university’s mission’, the Principal has stated.

This support programme will be implemented by a Universitat’s disabled technician, who is employed by Fundación Universia. He will work for the Unit for the Integration of Disabled People. He will assist the students who may need any educational, technical, or personal help related to their disability.

This support programme has two sides: the psycho-pedagogical side, concerning academic problems of the students like adaptation of texts; and the socio-pedagogical, concerning the problems related with personal relations and integration of students in the university.

This agreement is part of another one which is a framework agreement between both institutions signed this morning as well. This agreement tries to promote an open educational environment to ensure equality of its members and avoid discrimination of disabled people.

The UV’s General Foundation is a cultural entity with non profit motive in mind whose main goal is helping teaching and researching and cultural dissemination. Fundación Universia, in its turn, was created in 2005 and is a private entity without profit motive as well, which favors inclusion of disabled people.
