
Over seventy students from disadvantaged countries of Latin America are currently undertaking a postgraduate course in Medical Genetics, which the University of Valencia and the Institute of Genomic Medicine (IMEGEN, in the Science Park) are teaching in the framework of cooperation established by the academic institution.
The purpose of this course, which is conducted online and free of charge for these countries, is to provide basic knowledge in Medical Genetics necessary to understand the current clinical applications of Genetics. Addressed to graduates of Medicine, Pharmacy, Biology, Chemistry, Biochemistry and Biotechnology, as well as to students of final year of the undergraduate degrees above mentioned and graduates in Health Sciences.
It participate students from Paraguay, Bolivia, Peru, Ecuador, Colombia, Haiti, Honduras, Nicaragua and Guatemala, among others, and is directed by Manuel Pérez Alonso, Tenured Professor of the Department of Genetics of the University of Valencia, and Javier García Planells, Scientific Director of the Institute of Genomic Medicine and associated with the company Genagen, both located in the Science Park of the University of Valencia.
“In the field of human genome, the countries less developed suffer the risk of missing the boat and not to enjoy the advances occurring in medical Genetics for the benefit of people’s health”, argues Manuel Pérez. “For this reason, the training of health professionals in this field is essential both in developed countries and in undeveloped”.
