The Chair for Scientific dissemination UCC i of the University of Valencia promotes scientific culture as a tool for social integration. As a part of the 14 Week of Science, Technology and Innovation, the office of the Vice-Principal for Research and Science Policy has organized a course in scientific illustration at the Penitentiary Centre of Picassent. This collaboration started two years ago with a Mathematic Route around Valencia, guided by the professors Luis Puig and Tomás Queralt in which participated twelve inmates.

The collaboration with the penitentiary centre is conducted through the Secció d’Educació Secundària n1, which depends on Conselleria d’Educació, Formació i Ocupació of the Generalitat Valenciana and located in the Module 4 of the Penitentiary Centre of Picassent. One of its objectives is to supplement the teaching activity of students with activities that involve at the same time playful and educational aspects. Moreover, the initiative of bringing the professors of illustration to the centre and fund the materials needed to develop the course have been funded by the Spanish Foundation for Science and Technology (FECYT) of the Ministry of Science and Innovation and the CAM, because they are part of the Science Week.

A total of 31 people, mostly youths, have participated in the course of scientific illustration. Students of cicles formatius de grau mitja (intermediate training cycles) of gardening and floristry, hair cosmetics and hairstyling and from the Programa de Qualificació Profesional Inicial (PQPI)(Initial Professional Qualification Programme), were the participants, as they were interested in applying drawing techniques to their new formation. The students had the opportunity to perform different exercises of illustration, freehand draw and other techniques. In the first edition of this course, last year, the teachers emphasized “the high interest shown by the participants” and on this occasion they reiterated “the silence in the class during and after the initial exhibition”. Moreover “we consider that the experience is positive for the inmates, because they realized that they can reach a good level in illustration without previous knowledge, and also for us, for the satisfaction of contributing to the extent we can in providing new useful experiences”, they argue.

The Secció d’Educació Secundária located in the Penitentiary Centre of Picassent is a centre where is offered only Formació Professional (Professional Training), (two Cicles Formatius de Grau Mitja, Gardening and floristry, hair cosmetics and hairstyling and a Programa de Qualificació Professional Inicial of Assistant in Florestry). And the Module 4, there live together men and women in individual cells and they form a therapeutic community. All the inmates here are studying while they have the support of a therapeutic team (Deputy of treatment, educator, social worker, lawyer, pedagogue and teachers).
