The University of Valencia celebrates the Darwin Day with theatre plays, science workshops and the conference of Arturo Becerra, professor at the UNAM

Darwin's tree of life.

On Tuesday, 12 February, the English naturalist Charles Darwin, one of the fathers of the theory of evolution, would have turned 204. On the occasion of this celebration, the Cavanilles Institute of Biodiversity and Evolutionary Biology, the Faculty of Biological Sciences and the Chair for Scientific Dissemination UCC+I of the University of Valencia have organized a specific cultural programming for the Darwin Day, with the collaboration of Acció Cultural del País Valencià and the sponsorship of the Institut d’Estudis Catalans (Institute for Catalan Studies) and Societat Catalana de Biologia (Catalan Society for Biology). The activities start today.

The programming starts today Wednesday, 13 February at 19:00, at the Octubre Centre de Cultura Contemporània (Centre for Contemporary Culture), where the science workshop will take place, which is entitled ¿Mi médico debería saber de evolución? (Should my doctor know about evolution?). A wide range of subjects will be covered during the session: the importance of the knowledge about evolution when understanding about health and disease, whether medicine or the pathogens alter the course of human evolution or whether doctors should know about evolution or not. Some of the participants will be David Comas, professor of Human Evolution and Health at the Pompeu Fabra University; Joan Brines, Head of the Pediatric Service at the Hospital Clínico Universitario de Valencia, and Núria Cadenas, writer and bookseller.

The Charles Darwin Hall, at Burjassot Campus, will host next Thursday, at 12:30, the conference Origen y evolución temprana de la vida, by Arturo Becerra, professor at the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM) and visiting researcher of the Cavanilles Institute of Biodiversity and Evolutionary Biology at the University of Valencia.
