The University of Valencia hosts the only festival in the world of medium-length movies.

For the fifth year in a row, The International Festival of medium-length movies La Cabina organized by the Aula of Cinema of the University of Valencia open its doors to the public of Valencia in order to offer a selection of films in a format not very common in the commercial circles. It is about medium-length films, films between 30 and 60 minutes of duration. The festival is the only international worldwide dedicated to films of this format. It will be held in Valencia from 8th and 18th of November.

The 8th of November starts this contest with La Cabina dia 0, which will screen two silent and with music medium-length movies on stage on the terrace of the Library of Valencia at 20 pm. The 9th of November will be held in the room Luis García Berlanga of the Film Library the inauguration where will be screen the opening medium-length movie. However the official site will be the IVAM (Institute of Modern Art of Valencia) from 10th of November to 18th of the same month, where it will take place the closure. Awards will be grant in several categories and the best medium-length movie will receive 600 euros.

 Today has been presented at a press conference the V Edition of the International festival of Medium-Length movies La Cabina, with the presence of Antonio Ariño, vice-principal of Culture and Equality of the University of Valencia, Nuria Cidoncha, ,director of IVAC (Institute of Cinematography and Audiovisual) and Carlos Madrid director of the Festival La Cabina. In the word of Ariño: “La Cabina is a festival that breaks with the typical long festivals and that opens in a flexible manner the complexity of film culture.” Nuria Cidoncha has highlighted the fact that the festival has increased its audience by 70% over the years.

This year the star of the festival is the premiere in Spain of the medium-length movie about the prestigious composer and musician Neil Young. This is a black and white short film of 40 minutes starring the musician himself and that it has as a soundtrack the songs of his latest album Americana. It is called A Day at the Gallery and under the pseudonym Bernard Shakey, Young not only signs the film but also participates. Moreover we can hear him through the songs of Americana that set the movie. The film tells the story of a writer who visits an art gallery in order to find illustrations for his book about the great American songs, which he has titled America.

Including Young movie, the Selection Committee of the International Festival of Medium-length movies La Cabina organized by the Aula de Cine (Film Classroom) of the University of the Valencia with the support of IVAC (The Valencian Institute of Audiovisual and cinematography) has selected 23 medium-length movies that will compete in the Official Section from 235 received.

It must be noted the increase year after year not only of the number of medium-length movies received (almost 100%) but also the quality of themselves. As Carlos Madrid, director of the contest, pointed, “We are very proud of the career path of our festival due that in only 5 years it is gaining international prestige. La Cabina is the only film festival of this time length that accepts works from all around the world.”

Medium-length movies from 15 countries
Germany (5), Spain (1), Denmark (1) USA (1), United Kingdom (2), Italy (1), France (3), Taiwan (1), Austria (1), Poland (1) , South Korea (2), Japan (1), Czech Republic (1), Australia (1) Greece (1); and in all genres from comedy to drama through the musical (and three of them animation) will be exhibit on the screen of the IVAM (Institute of Modern Art of Valencia) during the 10 days that the festival will last. Opening medium-length movie
The tragicomic Augen Zu (Eyes Shut, Germany, 2011) is the medium-length movie that the 9th of November will open the V edition of La Cabina in the room Luis García Berlanga from the Film Library of Valencia. Its director, Julia Ziesche, will attend the event to present her film and participate in a live forum with the public. And also will attend La Cabina other directors that will compete: George Varsimashvili, director of the French comedy Les faux amis, (False Friends, France, 2011); Jan Buttler, director of Lilli (Lilli, Germany, 2011), Milad Alami, of kan Intet mig Rore (Nothing Can touch me, Denmark, 2011), and Rosto, graphic artist and director of animated musical the Monster of Nix (France / Belgium / Netherlands, 2011)
 

The entrance fee is 3 euros per session (two medium-length films will be screen in each session). You can buy a voucher of 3 sessions for 7.50 euros. Tickets and vouchers can be purchased at the box office of La Cabina located in the IVAM. The vouchers may also be purchased in La Tenda of the University of Valencia (located in the Cultural Centre La Nau, the Botanical Garden and the Tarongers Campus)
