
The University of Valencia is the third largest academic institution in Spain, the first in the Valencian Country and the 189 in the world, according to the world ranking URAP 2013 (University Ranking by Academic Performance), which measures the academic performance of 2.500 higher studies centres, through the quality and quantity of their scientific publications. Unlike 2012, the University steps up one position in Spain and in the world, and it is among the Top 100 in Europe (78).
The following Valencian University, the Universitat Politècnica de València, is in the 390 position in the world ranking (315 points), the tenth in Spain and 169 in Europe.
Ahead of the University of Valencia (353 points), in the Spanish ranking, are the University of Barcelona, followed by the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona (366). In the fourth place appears the Universidad Complutense de Madrid (last year in the third), with 352 points and in the 192 position in the world.
The research laboratory URAP, established by the Institut d’Informàtica de la Universitat Tècnica d’Orient Mitjà, combines six indicators that reveal levels of scientific productivity, the quality of the generated knowledge and the international projection of universities.
This index measures the number of articles, that is, the most recent scientific productivity, including articles published in 2012 and representing the 21% of the total score; the mentions, indicator that refers to the measurement of the research impact through the publications between 2008 and 2012 (21%); the documentation, that is, the scientific productivity through summaries, conferences, analysis, debates, texts and newspaper articles published by universities between 2008 and 2012 (18%); the impacts of the mentions in the press, which evaluates the publications quality (15%); and the international collaboration, which evaluates the global acceptance of a university through the number of publications in collaboration with foreign academic institutions (15%).
According to the classification published by the URAP 2013 ranking, Harvard University (Cambridge, USA) is the first world institution with the best academic performance, followed by the universities Johns Hopkins (Baltimore, USA) and Toronto (Canada). This ranking includes public and private universities.
The aim of this classification, according to a statement issued by the ranking coordination, is “to help universities to identify its potential areas of progress through indicators of academic performance”:
