
The University of Valencia is the ultimate beneficiary of the Universia scholarships to students with disabilities. Of the 166 grants awarded by the Universia Foundation this year, 15 have corresponded to students of the University of Valencia (surpassed only by the UNED), representing 9% of the total.
In this edition 2013-2014, scholarships given represent an increase of 8% compared to the call 2012-2013. These results show the evolution of this programme since its inception in 2007, when aid was granted in August. This time, Banco Santander, Endesa, American Express, Daimler, L' Oréal, Pfizer, American Express Barceló Viajes , Indra, Nestlé and Hilti have collaborated in the programme.
The distribution of scholarships by type was 15 “Access Scholarships”, 138 “Progress”, 8 “Mobility” and 5 for ADOP Plan attached to athletes. Of the 138 aid category Progress, 64 correspond to students that the Foundation renewed its commitment. All last year they received a Foundation Scholarship Universia and after the academic year they pass the 80% of their enrolled credits.
Within the general call for Capacitas Universia Foundation Scholarships, the Foundation has distributed 35.000 euros in the category “Mobility”. In order to promote international academic mobility, the eight students with disabilities have received a scholarship endowment of between 1,000 and 5,000 euros for the current academic year.
The selected students came from different universities across Spain: two from the University of Valencia, and one from the University of Valladolid, Technical University of Madrid, University of Seville, Comillas Pontifical University, National Distance Education University (UNED),and Pompeu Fabra University. Among the destinies of European scholarships predominate: Slovenia, Germany , Portugal, Italy and France. However, there are some who have chosen to study still further from home: Chicago and Brazil.
The universities with the highest number of applications submitted to the call 2013-2014 were: first, National Distance Education University (UNED) with 68 applications, representing 41% of the total. In Second place, the University of Valencia with 48 applications (29 %), in third place, the Complutense University of Madrid with 36 applications (21 %) and in fourth and fifth place, the University Rey Juan Carlos with 20 applications (12%) and the University of Barcelona with 19 applications (11%).
As for the university studies which have had more presence in this announcement have been, first, the Economic-Financial (38 applications -22%), second, Psychology (34 applications-20%), third, law (33 applications -19%) and in fourth and fifth, Medicine (23 applications-13%) and nursing (17 applications-10%) of the total applications received in this year’s scholarships.
The Capacitas Universia Foundation Scholarships Programme was created to promote the social integration of people with disabilities, helping to make the principle of equal opportunities through the provision of financial assistance to university students with disabilities.

Universia Foundation is a private non-profit organization promoted by Universia, the largest university network in the world, consisting of 1.262 universities in 23 countries. The Foundation was established in 2005 as the only specialized institution of the Third Sector in the group of university students with disabilities. Its main purpose is to promote inclusive higher education and access to employment for qualified persons with disabilities.
