Camerata-Cornello City Council (Italy) and the University of Valencia have signed an agreement in which the municipality subsidizes a research on Tasso family in Spain. Tasso, known as Tassis in Spain and Taxis in Germany, pioneered postal service in Europe. In Germany, successors conserve the nobility title of Principality of Thurn und Taxis.
The agreement has been signed by the Camerata-Cornello Major, Gianfranco Lazzarini, and the professor Júlia Benavent, of the Department of English and German at the University of Valencia. The agreement provides a financial aid to promote the research and the production of doctoral thesis on Tassis family in Spain.
Tasso family, originating from Cornello, obtained the privilege of Carlos V on postal service in the Empire. His work during the 15th century of postal service between Milano and Rome expanded during the first decades of the 16th century, and finally it monopolized the post service of all the Ausburg Empire. Ruggero, Janetto, Francesco and Leonardo families used to cover initially the services. Every important city of the Empire had a postmaster of Tasso or Tassis family. The postmaster in Spain was Raimundo de Tasis. The last representative of the family in Spain was the Count of Villamediana, the poet Juan de Tassis and Peralta, who died in a violent dispute.
The objective of the agreement of the University of Valencia and the Camerata-Cornello City Council is the study of the documents preserved in the General Archive of Simancas and the National and Royal Libraries. It will take two years and it encourages the research on the documents of this family in Spain and the publication of works in Italy.
The City Council project of Camerata-Cornello initiates in 2012 and it is expected its continuity until 2018, with the celebration of several cultural events on the poets Bernardo and Torquato Tasso, and on the Tassis family postmasters.
It is said that all Taxis around the world take their name from this family, whose importance in communication and transport in Europe, has been, without any doubt, essential for its development. Universities such as the Innsbruck University, Joannina University in Greece, Sapienza University of Rome and the Catholic University of Milan are participating in the project. Museo dei Tasso e della Storia postale, la Academia Italiana di Filatelia e Storia postale, the Central Archive of Thurn und Taxis of Regensburg also participate in this project.
