Universtiy tribute to Juan Montero, Full University Professor of Procedural Law

Un momento del homenaje.

Leading jurists have participated this Friday, 16 November, in a homage to Juan Montero Aroca, Full University Professor of Procedural Law from the University of Valencia, who has reached the retirement age at 70 years old. The Vice-Principal, Esteban Morcillo; the Vice- Principal for Institutional Relations and Communication, Silvia Barona; the Dean of the Faculty María Elena Olmos; and the President of the High Court of Justice, Pilar de la Oliva, are some of the personalities who have participated in the tribute.

Other personalities who have participated in the homage are: Carolina Sanchis Crespo, director of the Department for Administrative Law and Procedural law, Juan Luís Gómez Colomer, from the University Jaume I, and Federico José Domínguez, President of the Tribunal Casacional of Buenos Aires.

Juan Montero was born in Elche de la Sierra (Albacete) in 1942. He began his studies at the Faculty of Law in Valencia in 1960, and became Full University professor in Oviedo in 1976 and a year later in Valencia. Besides teaching, Montero has practiced law and he has been Judge from the High Court of Justice of the Valencian Country since 1989 to 2011. He is the author of 279 publications, most notably his widely reprinted ‘Manual de Derecho Jurisdiccional’.

The Vice-Principal has described Montero as a man “committed to the science of law”. And he added: “his task should serve to enlighten the darkness of the despair, which is the adversity of the times we are living and every student of law”.

Silvia Barona, who has declared herself disciple of Juan Montero, has made an emotive review of the personal life of the honouree, of whom she has stressed his work capacity, his polemicist spirit and his musical preferences. Juan Luís Gómez Colomer has focused on his teaching and research career, while Federico José Domínguez has evoked the influence of Montero’s doctrine in the legislation of different countries in Latin America.
