
At 12 o´clock today, the office of the principal will be the headquaters of a gathering to observe a moment of silence in recognition of the right of the LGTB community. Universitat´s governing council has read a manifesto in defence of sexual diversity and the rights of lesbians, gays, transexuals and bisexuals.
As a public institution, Universitat de València has defined itself throughout the years as a supporter of politics that contribute to constructing a fairer, more equal, more solidary and participative, more democratic and advanced society.
Today, on Tuesday 28 of June, the International LGBT Pride Day is celebrated. In this context, sexual diversity and individual freedom are openly accepted. Gay Pride is a sign of respect and solidarity. It is a result of all the effort and all the lawsuits initiated by the LGTB community with the end of having their rights recognized under equal conditions.
According to UV, visibility and the exercise of human rights by the LGTB community is necessary within an advanced, respectful and plural society. In the current context, there is various evidence of violent acts commited against people on the basis of their sexual identity, which can be traced back to past social stigma which a modern European society has to overcome.
As a public institution, UV has characterised itself over the years for its defence of the freedom of expression and human equality, as well as for the collaboration with and support of the LGTB comminity through various activities which soon will be organised, as it has been agreed with the most representative LGTB communities, thus contributing to making UV a welcoming institution at international level. That is to say, one which allows people to develop and to express themselves freely.
