Knowing how people with different ages, hobbies and countries of origin live a social event like a World Cup is the aim of the World Cup Game international study conducted by researchers at the Universitat Jaume I in Castelló (UJI) and the Universitat de València (UV), in collaboration with the Universitat Pompeu Fabra and the Federal University of Sao Paulo. The emotional response to a socially shared event, and therefore influenced by many variables, such as the World Cup to be held this summer in Brazil, has a great interest for the study and understanding of psychological wellness.
The study seeks to understand how people from different countries, whether interested in football or not, live this sporting event. Thus, the goal of this research is twofold: on the one hand, exploring individual emotional response to this future event, and on the other hand, analyzing possible differences between people from different countries, especially if we consider that the meanings, history and experiences awakened by the World Cup can be very different from one country to another.
This research will engage people of all ages and nationalities, whether they are football fans or not. Participants have to answer a short survey on the Internet, which will take no more than ten minutes, before and during the World Cup. At the end of the World Cup, three 3GO 10' tablets will be raffled among all the participants. Rocío Herrero, researcher at the Laboratory of Psychology and Technology (Labpsitec, UJI), explains that "up to now, we have had the participation of supporters from Argentina, Spain, Chile, Brazil, France and Italy, and our purpose is to continue involving people from these and other countries to cooperate voluntarily with the research, and that is why we are making an open call to participate”.
The study will be a pioneer in terms of comparing the experiences of people from different countries. The characteristics of the research, the ranking of countries involved, the results of the raffle and the findings arising from this study, once completed, will be posted on the website http://theworldcupgame.wix.com/worldcup2014.
