Valencian university students reject the Government’s budget cuts

Students' representatives.

The students’ highest representatives of the Valencian public universities have held an urgent meeting at UPV’s Casa del Alumno in order to analyze the consequences of the measures passed by the Spanish Government last April 20th. They have also discussed the possible joint actions to raise awareness on this matter.

El documento aprobado explica:

In view of the possibility of an increase in the university registration fees, which will be implemented in the Valencian Community by the Generalitat Valenciana, we would like to state that:
-We have not been neither informed nor consulted on any measure affecting the university system.
-We firmly reject the increase in the registration fees because we consider it is out of proportion, especially at these economical crisis times.
-We are truly concerned since these measures are access barriers to higher education and they will have consequences for the students with less financial resources. They not only will restrict the access of new students but will prevent many students from finishing their degrees.
-We reject these kind of measures especially when there is no adequate grants system making sure the equal opportunities in the access to university.

For all these reasons, as students’ representatives we want to express our deep unrest. We think it is essential to start a dialogue process with the different agents in the university community, especially with the students, as they are the most affected actors.

We have already asked for a meeting with the Valencian Minister for Education, María José Catalá. We also want to announce, that we are going to take the protest actions to stop these measures.
