Wide day of action during the general strike in the University of Valencia

University staff in the demonstration yesterday.

The strike call launched by union members and activists had a wide following in the University of Valencia. According to the provisional data, 95% of students, 78,90% of Administration Services members, and 60,50% of teaching and researching staff took part in the strike. Protests were hold without serious incidents at the University facilities. At the streets near the Burjassot Campus, arrests were carried out, including those of some students.

According to data collection, in most of the centres of the institution classes were cancelled. Those centres were the Faculties of Pharmacy; Nursing; Geography and History; Language Studies; Translation and Communication; Philosophy and Education Sciences; Physiotherapy; Teacher Training; Social Sciences; Economics and Physical Activity and Sports Centre. In the Faculty of Physics there was only a 3% of activity; and a 5% in the Faculties of Maths, Chemistry, Psychology and Law. In the Faculty of Biology, only 15% of classes were given; 20% in Engineering; and 50% in Medicine and Dentistry.

Pickets came into different centres, but there was no direct confrontation. Only few fire extinguishers of the Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry were damaged.

The General Directorate of the academic institution will be in touch with the Governing Council to obtain information about the detainees. Most of them were released after testifying.

In the afternoon, many students took part in the demonstration held in Valencia. A banner of the Platform for the Defence of Public University was exhibited by the University staff.
