Extraordinary Doctorate Awards Ceremony 2022-2023

39 doctors from all areas of knowledge at the UV have been awarded with the Extraordinary Doctorate Awards for the academic year 2022-2023.

The Awards
The Universitat de València awards the Extraordinary Doctorate Awards every academic year. This distinction recognises doctoral theses with the highest level of quality. The Extraordinary Doctoral Award is awarded by the Universitat de València to distinguish the authors of doctoral theses that, due to their quality, impact and projection in their respective fields of knowledge, are considered to be of outstanding quality.  The Governing Council, at the proposal of the Doctoral School, gives the awards, which are presented at an official ceremony.

The Ceremony
The ceremony, held on Friday, 19 April 2024 at the paraninfo of the La Nau building, was presided over by the Principal of the Universitat de València, Mª Vicenta Mestre, together with the director of the Doctoral School, María Amparo Tórtola, the vice-principal for Academic Regulations and Teaching Staff, Ernest Cano, the vice-principal for Research, Carlos Hermenegildo, and the general secretary of the Universitat, Mª Elena Olmos.

The director of the Doctoral School, María Amparo Tórtola, encouraged the young researchers to continue to maintain their enthusiasm for creativity and curiosity and to maintain all those qualities that will make them stand out in research and other projects. He also highlighted the mission of the Doctoral School of the UV, which is the academic and administrative organisation of doctoral programmes that promotes excellence, visibility and international exchange.

In his turn, the Vice-Principal for Research, Carlos Hermenegildo, in addition to congratulating the excellent researchers and thesis supervisors, reviewed the current situation of research at the UV and also called on doctors to continue progressing in their scientific careers.

In her speech, the general secretary, Mª Elena Olmos, read out the agreements of the Governing Council of the Universitat de València in this respect.

Finally, principal Mª Vicenta Mestre recalled that the Special Awards are 'the highest recognition of academic excellence at the highest level of training that can be achieved in our university system'. However, the Principal did not want to miss the opportunity to call once again for adequate funding for Valencian public universities and, finally, she congratulated all the award winners, highlighting the effort and excellence of the award winners. She also wanted to mention the support of the families of the award winners in gaining access to the highest level of higher education, the doctoral programme.

The award winners
By agreement of the Governing Council, in accordance with the proposal submitted by the Permanent Board of the Doctoral School, the awards have been given in all areas of knowledge to the following 39 doctors: Faraj Abu-Elbar Santirso, Yaiza María Arenas Ortiz, María del Pilar Ballester Ferre, Juan Carlos Bel Martínez, Pau Bertomeu Pi, Maria Bordian, Ángel Campos Perales, José Ángel Cano Mateu, Alessandra Cimbalo, Javier del Hoyo Francisco, Óscar Díaz Cambronero, María Fernández López, Cristina Flor Rufino, Víctor García Bustos, Miguel García Folgado, Marina García-Granero Gascó, María González Marimón, Brayan Grau Argente, María Lairón Peris, José León Alapont, Víctor Marcos Garcés, David Martí Aguado, Aranzazu Martínez de Marañón Peris, Borja Mateu Luján, Cristian Molla Esparza, Elisabet Mora Pérez, Raúl Payá Castiblanque, Lluís Pérez Planells, Eric Puche Franqueza, Alba Soriano Arnanz, Néstor Vercher Savall and Sergio Yagüe Blanco.


Doctoral School
The Doctoral School of the Universitat de València is directed by Professor Maria Amparo Tórtola Baixauli, who holds a degree in Physics from the Universitat de València with an Extraordinary Graduate Award for her degree and is doctor in Theoretical Physics with an Extraordinary Doctorate Award.

The School has one of the largest offers of doctoral programmes in Spain, covering all areas of knowledge. It is the academic structure of the Universitat de València in charge of managing and coordinating its doctoral programmes, with the aim of training and preparing doctoral students linked to a coherent scientific and academic project.

Each academic year around 500 people defend their doctoral thesis in the 60 doctoral programmes offered by the UV. The theses read at our Universitat are of high quality, as evidenced not only by the grades obtained, but also by the 'international mention' status that 30% of the theses read receive.
