This Friday, at 6:30 p.m. at Kinépolis, the science communicators and influencers Javier Santaolalla and Rocío Vidal (La Gata de Schrödinger) and the virtual artist Patricia Barrachina (Patossa) will be the stars of the celebration of the 10th anniversary of the discovery of the Higgs Boson, the scientific discovery of the 21st century that could mark a turning point in modern physics. This event is organised by the Institute of Corpuscular Physics (IFIC, UV/CSIC).
This year physics has a very special date, the 10th anniversary of the discovery of the most sought-after particle in the history of science, the Higgs Boson. The announcement of its discovery took place on 4th July 2012 and marked a breakthrough in the field of modern physics. To commemorate this date and discuss the importance of this discovery, the Institute of Corpuscular Physics, a joint centre of the Universitat de València and the CSIC, has prepared an informative event for the general public. It will take place this Friday 8th July, at 6:30 p.m., at Kinépolis Valencia.
Javier Santaolalla, who experienced the discovery first-hand, will talk about the Higgs Boson and its implications for physics. Rocío Vidal, also known as the Gata de Schrödinger, will deal with the social issues involved in discovery and try to bring physics closer to the everyday world. Patricia Barrachina ‘Patossa’ will illustrate with her visual art the explanations of the IFIC ATLAS group that participated in the discovery. The event will be attended by the IFIC disseminator Alberto Aparici.
The event’s protagonists
Javier Santaolalla is physicist, engineer, PhD in particle physics and science communicator. He worked at CERN where he was part of the team of scientists who discovered the Higgs Boson at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). He now devotes himself exclusively to dissemination, participating in science shows, collaborating on television, has written 7 books and has a trilogy of YouTube channels: Date un Voltio, Date un Vlog and Date un Mí.
Rocío Vidal, known as la Gata de Schrödinger (Spanish for Schrödinger’s Cat), is a science journalist, founder of the YouTube channel of La gata de Schrödinger, that actually has 580,000 subscribers. She is dedicated to popularising science with a strong touch of social criticism. It addresses topics such as pseudoscience, beliefs, feminism, social and environmental awareness, among others, with the aim of encouraging critical thinking among her followers.
Patricia Barrachina, Patossa, is a multidisciplinary artists who generates visual universes based on colours, materials and objects applied to illustration, stop motion and motion graphics animation and stage projections. She also takes part in live visual creation performances for events and shows.
Organised by IFIC’s ATLAS group, the event is sponsored by the CIDEGENT and Prometeo programmes of the Generalitat Valenciana (Valencian Government), as well as the projects of the State Research Agency.
