In 1841, in the days before the American Civil War, Solomon Northup (Chiwetel Ejiofor) lives in Saratoga Springs, with his wife and his two children, as a free black man. Two white men (Scoot McNairy y Taran Killam) offer him a job as a violinist in Washington. Solomon says goodbye to his family for a stay that only last a few weeks. But, during his last day in Washington when he is celebrating the success of his music having dinner with the two men who have hired him, they drugged him. The next day, the two men are gone and he is without documentation or money in a dungeon, bound in chains and ready to be sent to the South of the country to be sold as a slave.
