From 20 to 31 January. Opening 20 January, 12:00h

The exhibition “175th Anniversary of the Official Cartography. Elaboration of the Map of Spain” aims to make known the labour that the national Geographic Institute (IGN) has developed since its foundation in the year 1870. The Universitat de València, through the Office of the Vice-Principal for Territorial Projection and Participation, together with the IGN, aims to approach to the citizens the key elements to know in depth the Spanish geography.

The joint of panels that compose this exhibition, written by members of the IGN, review the history of this institution and its different projects carried out. This journey through the time and geography show the initial difficulties to establish a modern cartography of the State in the 19th century, the necessary works in geodesic triangulation, levelling or representation of the jurisdictional limits of the territory, among others, until reaching today to the achievement of a whole geographical corpus with material as the topographic map of Spain or the National Atlas of Spain.

It is a work of almost two centuries that allow us for meeting the territory in a detail and modern way. A necessary sample for the Spanish and Valencian cartography, where panels that approach us to our most immediate environment, as in the case of Ontinyent and Gandía, are included.
