The Lopez Piñero Institute for the History of Science and Medicine (joint centre of the CSIC and the University of Valencia), with headquarters in the Palau de Cerveró, and the Cinema Club of the UVEG present the film series Falsos documentales: cuestionando la ciencia (Mockumentaries: calling science into question). The film series will start next Thursday 5 June with the screening of the film Alternative 3, (Christopher Miles, 1977, 56 min.). Tuesday 10 the film Opération Lune view (William Karel, 2002, 52 min.) can be watched. To close this film series, on Thursday 19 June, Forgotten Silver, (Peter Jackson, Costa Botes, 1995, 53 min.) will be screened. The screenings, that will take place on the stated dates at 18:00 in Palau de Cerveró’s conference room, will be in original version with Spanish subtitles. Each session will have a prior presentation and a subsequent discussion by a member of the Cinema Club and an expert in the subject matter. This film series will show a selection of films that are about supposed scientific discoveries, intentionally manipulated by the filmmakers, and that will allow the audience to reflect at the same time on the credibility of the scientific and film stories. In the first session, Thursday 5 June, Alternativa 3, a British TV production of the 70s, articulated as a journalistic investigation about strange missings of British scientists, and who are also involved in a secret plan for constructing secret bases in the space in order to prevent a global climate catastrophe on Earth. The session on Tuesday 10 June shows the French filmOperación Luna, a film that narrates the most controversial scientific achievements of the 20th century, the Apollo 11 moon landing in 1969. This mockumentary reviews each and every one of the arguments used by the conspiracy theorists in their quest to challenge the official version about the arrival of Man to the only natural satellite of Earth, for many orchestrated and filmed by Stanley Kubrick, himself. The last session will be on Thursday 19 June and the film Forgotten Silver will be screened, an alternative version about the birth of the Seventh Art. A fake based on the discovery, by the celebrated filmmaker Peter Jackson, of some old film reels found at the outhouse of a neighbour, which show how a New Zealand pioneer anticipated to the technical discoveries of Lumière Brothers and company.
