Conference in Sollana and Sueca. During two afternoons on 16 (Sollana) and 17 (Sueca) September.

The sessions aim to diagnose the current state of the Valencian agriculture and its future prospects. Agriculture employs a percentage of the population relatively low (around 5%), but occupies half of our territory, and in regions such as La Ribera more than 90%. The Agriculture, therefore, is, together with forest areas, the factor that has the greatest impact on the landscape scene. Its abandonment would cause the destruction of our agricultural landscape.

Due to the low productivity of agricultural yields compared to other productive sectors, over the past decades it has lost many farms in Valencia. First, rainfed farming was abandoned, later irrigation farming, although the agrarian crisis doesn’t affect everyone equally. While the Albufera rice field appears to be stable, in some regions thousands of acres of orange groves it have been wasted or have been replaced by khaki or other fruit trees. On the other hand, many acres of orange trees have invaded the foot of the mountains close to the plains, occupying old rainfed lands or destroying literally the mountain landscape.

With this initiative of the Office of the Vice-Principal for Participation and Territorial Projection and the city councils of Sueca and Sollana aim to create an space for debate, where to reflect about the agriculture possibilities of Valencian regions through the contributions of specialists of the University of Valencia in economy, local development, landscape and biodiversity, etc.

The conferences are open to local and regional groups (agrarian, environmental, cultural, and educational), technicians, researchers, professors, students and the general public.
